From Caregiver to Catalyst: Honoring Alzheimer’s Families & Supporting Caregiver Research
Honoring a Loved One, Supporting Millions of Caregivers
When David Klapper lost his wife Betty to Alzheimer’s disease in 2022 after 15 years of caregiving, he could have walked away quietly in grief. Instead, he chose to transform personal heartbreak into purpose—by funding critical research to support the millions of caregivers walking the same road.
Betty was 73 when she passed. David describes those caregiving years as “all-consuming,” a challenging journey of love, sacrifice, and resilience. Like many Americans—more than 11 million currently providing unpaid dementia care—David found himself navigating the emotional toll and physical exhaustion of caregiving while trying to maintain his own life.
A Lasting Legacy: The Klapper Family Chair in Caregiving Research
In February 2025, David Klapper launched a bold initiative at Indiana University: the Klapper Family Chair in Aging and Family Caregiving Research. His mission? To fund research dedicated to improving the lives of caregivers and patients alike—something he believes is just as important as finding a cure.
“We may be years from a silver bullet,” David said, “but in the meantime, we need sensible, humane care for those afflicted and the loved ones that suffer alongside them.”
This groundbreaking endowment reflects a growing national focus on caregiver support, aging in place, and dementia-related quality of life—areas that have long been underfunded and overlooked.
Why David’s Story Matters: The Caregiver Crisis Is Growing
David’s story is deeply personal—but it’s also painfully common.
With Alzheimer’s diagnoses on the rise and an aging population, the demand for family caregivers is growing rapidly. Many of these caregivers face burnout, isolation, and financial stress, often with little to no formal training or external support.
That’s why stories like David and Betty’s resonate so strongly—and why their legacy matters.
